Preservation in Centre County

Back to List

Category A - B - C - D

Category C includes those sites with active caretakers but which are no longer accepting any more burials or which have sections of stones which may be in need of conservation or restoration.

These sites are primarily in need of the occasional volunteer hand in dealing with the problems associated with the early markers which they possess. Many of these sites also fit the State and National definitions of a Historic Burial Ground.

Since they already have an established caretaker group, special care should be taken in working with these groups and educating these groups of the available information on preservation and conservation which will be held at the Centre Furnace Mansion. In some cases the groups may simply be in need of learning the "how to's" when it comes to taking care of older, more fragile monuments and stones. In other cases, the groups may request, or volunteers may request, a volunteer work day at the site in order to care for the older sections of the sites.

029 - Curtin (Old)

Perhaps the biggest concern with these sites will be a continual watchdog effort to ensure that these older cemeteries do not fall by the wayside and into Category B. Many are in good to excellent condition at the moment, but due to their age and larger sizes often have trouble keeping track of stones which have fallen or are starting to crack. In some cases the damage may also be due to vandalism which needs to be taken care of on a different level of preservation, but can cause an amazing amount of loss in a short amount of time.
