CIVIL WAR ROAD SHOW
July 12-15, 2012
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Commemorates the
150th Anniversary of the Civil War! The Centre County Historical Society joined the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the Pennsylvania Heritage Society in hosting the PA Civil War 150 Road Show in State College in July.
The Pennsylvania Civil War 150 Road Show is a dynamic exhibit experience, housed in an impressive 53-foot trailer that will be located in the parking area adjacent to the Bryce Jordan Center. The exhibit will convey accounts of the many ways Pennsylvanians experienced the Civil War. Interactive features include: An LED-lit map, stereoscopic photographs, original compositions of Civil War-era music and sound effects, hands-on objects and animated stories, online scrapbooking activity, and a story recording booth. The Road Show encourages citizens at every level of the community to experience our nation’s history in commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War!
Check out the Road Show set-up time-lapse video, or click to hear visitors' Road Show stories.
From the battlefield to the home front, the Civil War produced incredible personal stories of Pennsylvanians. During the Road Show, you will have a chance to experience some of those stories. While there, take a self-portrait in the style of Civil War era photography, and create a Road Show Scrapbook about what you learned. Bring along a Civil War era photo or artifact, share your Road Show experience or personal family Civil War history through the Road Show’s Share Your Story oral history recording booth.
Only during the Road Show, a special joint membership offer will be available to join Pennsylvania Heritage Society (PHS) and CCHS* (*new CCHS members only) for a combined total of $40.00. With this special offer, PHS will be giving new members: A commemorative PA Civil War 150 medallion, a complimentary issue of Pennsylvania Heritage, and 10% off purchases from www.shoppaheritage.com. (PHS membership also includes 4 issues / 1 year of Pennsylvania Heritage magazine.) CCHS benefits for this special offer are: A 12-month individual membership, 1 complimentary issue of the Centre County Heritage about the Civil War (2007), 1 complimentary issue of the summer 2012 Mansion Notes newsletter, and 1 FREE admission to the 2012 Stocking Stuffer Antiques, Art & Fine Craft Sale (Nov. 30 - Dec. 1, 2012). (CCHS membership also includes 4 quarterly issues of Mansion Notes, and 1 annual Centre County Heritage publication.) [*This offer is extended to new CCHS members only. Current CCHS members may still join PHS, and then transfer the additional CCHS membership as a gift in another's name.]

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
CCHS needs your help!! (Please read our volunteer letter.) In order to host the Road Show, we will need the help of up to 24 volunteers each day if each person works one 3-hour shift – however, you certainly may work more than one shift!
- 9am-4pm—Wed. July 11 (Set-Up)
- 12pm-8pm—Thursday, July 12
- 11am-8pm—Friday, July 13
- 11am-8pm—Saturday, July14
- 12pm-5pm—Sunday, July 15
*1st shift begins 30 min. before opening to the public. Last shift ends 30 min. after, to allow time to clean up.*
Volunteers do NOT need to be Civil War historians. We simply need warm, friendly faces to serve as ambassadors, welcoming visitors to the Road Show and Centre County to help them navigate through this wonderful experience. There will be some positions that involve sitting, but most of our volunteers will need to be able to stand for their shift, with breaks as needed.Volunteers ages 18 and older are being sought. Each volunteer will receive a FREE PA Civil War 150 Commemorative T-shirt, bottles of water, and light snacks. There will be free parking available for all volunteers near the Road Show site
A one-hour volunteer training session will be held on Thursday, June 28th at 5:30pm at Centre Furnace Mansion (1001 E. College Ave., 16801). Please plan to attend. If you cannot be there, we will make other arranements to provide you with the training information.
If you are interested in volunteering for the Road Show July 12-15, 2012, please contact volunteer coordinator Cathy Horner by email. She will provide you a volunteer application to request the following information: Name, phone #, email address, mailing address, t-shirt size, dates & times available. Thank you for all your help!
